Boating Management Strategy sets sail
After 18 months of development and consultation with a range of river users, the Trust's Boating Management Strategy for the Swan Canning Riverpark has now been finalised.
The strategy guides the management of boating in the Swan Canning Riverpark and includes recommendations to ensure the sustainable future of this popular pastime.
What it covers
The strategy addresses a range of boating issues including:
- boat accommodation such as moorings and marinas;
- dinghy storage on foreshores;
- boat maintenance practices;
- boat wash;
- boat noise;
- fuel and oil discharge;
- launching facilities;
- sewage disposal;
- jetties; and
- anchoring and damage to the riverbed.
The strategy was developed in response to an increase in boating in the Riverpark - with boat numbers tipped to double by 2025 - and growing community concern about the social and environmental impacts of boating.
More than 40 submissions were received when the draft strategy was released for public comment in January 2008. Boat wash and moorings attracted the most comments, with noise also noted as an increasing issue.
What it hopes to achieve
The strategy aims to promote responsible use of the rivers by boaties without adverse impacts on the environment or other river users.
The strategy encourages cooperation between:
- the Trust;
- other State Government agencies including Department for Planning and Infrastructure
and Department of Environment and Conservation;
- local government;
- the boating industry; and
- community groups.
This strategy is the key policy document outlining the Trust's management approach to boating activities which may affect the rivers.
