Feral fish in the Swan and Canning rivers

New reports of pearl cichlids, a feral fish species (found in the Bennett Brook in March 2006) have surfaced, prompting surveys of the Swan River near Eden Hill and Caversham.

Subsequent surveys by researchers have not yet located any further samples, but the find has raised concerns that pearl cichlids may have already established in the Swan River. Pest fish species can cause damage to river health and degrade environmental systems. They can threaten biological diversity and cause losses to agriculture and aquaculture industries. The potential for aquarium and ornamental fish to become pests in the wild is considered extremely high.

The Swan River Trust reminds aquarium owners never to release exotic fish, algae or other aquatic life in the Swan and Canning rivers or their tributaries (this includes local lakes and drains). Be on the lookout for these introduced pests. Report their presence to the FISHWATCH service on 1800 815 507.

For more information, please contact the Trust or the Department of Fisheries.

In recent years there have been algal blooms in the rivers. If there are high levels of potentially harmful algae, the Swan River Trust and Department of Environment notify the Department of Health, which in turn warns the public about the affected section of the river. The local government may erect warning signs on the foreshore. These alerts will also feature in the Trust’s weekly Algae Activity Report.

Events such as the annual Skyshow may result in restricted access to parts of the river.

For information about swimming in the Swan and Canning rivers please see the Environmental Health Directorate's Healthy Swimming website www.healthyswimming.health.wa.gov.au.

Contact the Trust on (08) 9278 0900 or after hours on 0419 192 845 to report an algal bloom or river emergency.
