About the CSMC
The Cockburn Sound Management Council (CSMC) is a State Government initiative, which aims to coordinate environmental planning and management to protect Cockburn Sound and its catchment.
Established as a Committee of the Board of the Water and Rivers Commission, the Council is comprised of 26 members, representing a variety of interested bodies including community, industry, commonwealth defence, state government and local government.
The Council has been set up in response to increasing pressures on Cockburn Sound, which is the most intensively used marine embayment in Western Australia.
The Council's first task is to develop an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the Sound.
The EMP will be an implementation strategy for the Environmental Protection Policy (EPP) for Cockburn Sound, which is being developed by the Environmental Protection Authority.
The implementation of the EMP will ensure coordination of environmental management and planning for Cockburn Sound. In particular, the EMP will develop strategies to meet the environmental objectives, criteria and targets set in the Environmental Protection Policy.
