Recognition and reward for urban communities working towards sustainability
What is the Sustainable Cities Program ?
The Sustainable Cities program is an environmental awards program for urban and metropolitan communities in Western Australia.
Sustainable Cities Awards recognise community organisations, schools, businesses and local government agencies who are active in their communities and making valuable contributions towards environmental sustainability.
Such projects not only enhance the environment but also improve the standard of living and quality of life for urban communities.
Who can enter Sustainable Cities?
The Sustainable Cities Awards are designed to cater for everyone but generally entrants include:
Local councils
Community groups
Businesses
Schools
Registered clubs
What geographical area does Sustainable Cities cover?
Sustainable Cities will cover the metropolitan area from Mandurah in the south to Yanchep in the north and east to Mundaring. Regional centres with a population over 15 000 will also be eligible to enter the program.
What sort of projects can be included?
Almost any community project can be considered as a Sustainable Cities project. Community groups may already be working on many projects that can be recognised through Sustainable Cities including projects that:
minimise and control waste and litter
encourage ecologically sustainable development
celebrate diverse community cultures
develop strong partnerships between local communities and local government
better manage and preserve heritage buildings
encourage water and energy saving
increase environmental awareness
conserve bushland to encourage biodiversity

What are the benefits of entering Sustainable Cities?
There are many benefits in becoming involved in Sustainable Cities including:
increased community pride and morale
recognition for those who contribute to your local community
improved natural environment
increased tourism
reduction of waste and minimisation of litter
increased public awareness of environmental issues
introduction of water and energy saving initiatives
leverage when seeking financial support for future projects
Each winner receives a sign to display, a certificate and associated promotion for your project and the work you have been doing.
What are the categories?
Water Conservation Award
Recognises achievement through innovation by community, government and business under the principles and practical actions associated with environmental protection and sustainability with particular relevance to water conservation.
Protection of the Environment Award
Recognises achievement in the protection of the natural environment and, specifically, the preservation of native flora and fauna.
Young Legends Award
Recognises environmental achievement through youth initiative and/or by a community, which encourages and promotes youth initiative and environmental education.
Community Action Award
Recognises achievement in community beautification, presentation and pride.
Environmental Innovation Award
Recognises achievement through innovation by community, government and business under the principles and practical actions associated with environment protection and sustainability, this can include things such as smart building design and energy efficiency.
Waste Management and Litter Prevention Award
Recognises achievement in community litter management and reduction, resource recovery and waste management including the undertaking of litter audits, and litter education programs, initiatives which conserve resources, the recovery and reuse of materials, and the appropriate disposal of non- recyclable materials.
How do I enter?

Write a 500 word application outlining and describing your project/s
All written submissions and photos will be assessed by judges from Keep Australia Beautiful WA. Finalists will be selected for each category and for the overall winner category. All finalists will be invited to attend a State awards ceremony. The overall winner will go on to compete with other Australian States in the Keep Australia Beautiful National Sustainable Cities Awards.
