The town of Walpole has been crowned this year's winner for the 2007 Tidy Towns-Sustainable Communities Award.
Walpole was found to have a very high level of community support and a strong focus on building partnerships. This has led to a broad range of projects that fall within a long-term vision and plan for sustainability in the town.
Walpole's projects included the Walpole Primary School's UR Walpole Eco-Education program, waste wise practices, a weed removal program, nature conservation activities and town clean-up events to remove litter.
The Walpole community has shown great commitment to educate its residents about water conservation and encourage water conservation practices through community meetings and workshops. This is particularly important given the current focus on climate change and recognises the importance of protecting and preserving our natural resources.
Walpole is now in the running for the national Tidy Towns-Sustainable Cities awards to be held in Hobart in April 2008. The national judge is expected to visit Walpole in December 2007.
