Container deposits are small refundable fees on items such as drink cans and bottles which can be redeemed on return of the containers to specified locations. Systems of this nature aim to encourage the return of containers for recycling and discourage the inappropriate disposal and/or littering of these items.
In early 2006 the WA State Government initiated an investigation into best practice container deposit systems for Western Australia. Part of this process involved the establishment of a Stakeholder Advisory Group to oversee an extensive community consultation process and to provide advice to the Minister for the Environment on container deposit systems for WA.
The Chair of the Keep Australia Beautiful Council (WA) has been invited to participate on the Stakeholder Advisory Group and aims to ensure that the investigation into best practice container deposit schemes for WA is thorough in determining such systems level of effectiveness as a litter prevention tool.
