Litter Act 1979

The Litter Act 1979 (the Act) is Western Australia's principal litter legislation. The Act contains provisions for the:

  • Establishment and membership of the Keep Australia Beautiful Council
  • Prevention of litter
  • Enforcement, proceedings and penalties
  • Regulations and rules.

The Keep Australia Beautiful Council is currently reviewing the Litter Act 1979 with proposed changes to include:

  • The introduction of specific penalties for illegal dumping and for corporate offences
  • Increasing the powers of authorised officers to be able to order site clean ups and for offenders to meet site clean up costs
  • Providing Local Government Officers authority to operate across jurisdictions.
